THE WHOLE DAM STORY: A Review of the China Yangtze Three Gorges Dam

چکیده
Some marvel at these massive structures as engineering wonders that provide inestimable public benefit – things like flood control, water supply, hydroelectric power, improved navigation and water recreation. Yet others don’t share this appreciation and have doubts about the ability of humankind to effectively harness nature, particularly the power of the world’s mighty rivers. They decry the damming of any free-flowing stream because of the irretrievable changes that are caused – things like the loss of important fishery resources, the inundation of arable land, the destruction of antiquities and archeological sites, and of course, the displacement of indigenous peoples.

The Three Gorges Dam: Does it accelerate or delay the progress towards eliminating transmission of schistosomiasis in China?
The Three Gorges Dam, located in the largest endemic area of schistosomiasis in China, is one of the world's largest hydroelectric projects to date. Some large-scale hydro projects have resulted in schistosomiasis emergence or re-emergence. Therefore, the dam's potential impact on the transmission of Schistosoma japonicum has raised concerns from medical researchers worldwide. A systematic lite...
متن کاملReservoir resettlement in China: past experience and the Three Gorges Dam
This paper reviews involuntary resettlement resulting from dam-building, which has been ignored relative to the dominant focus of migration research in China, rural to urban migration. Reservoir resettlement in China has a long history, often of misery and hardship for those displaced. Relocatees affected by the Three Gorges Project (1994– 2009) on the Yangtze River face a similar situation. In...
متن کاملSeasonal and annual maximum streamflow forecasting using climate information: application to the Three Gorges Dam in the Yangtze River basin, China
This paper explores the potential for seasonal prediction of hydrological variables that are potentially useful for reservoir operation of the Three Gorges Dam, China. The seasonal flow of the primary inflow season and the peak annual flow are investigated at Yichang hydrological station, a proxy for inflows to the Three Gorges Dam. Building on literature and diagnostic results, a prediction mo...
متن کاملEnvironmental water body characteristics in a major tributary backwater of the unique and strongly seasonal Three Gorges Reservoir, China.
Ecological consequences of large dams, particularly regarding the Three Gorges Dam (TGD) on the Yangtze River in China, have been controversially and internationally discussed. Water quality within the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) has been deteriorated by highly underestimated eutrophication and algal blooms. Globally, the TGR is delineated from other comparable reservoirs by its low mean water...
متن کاملAssessment of Hydrologic Alterations Caused by the Three Gorges Dam in the Middle and Lower Reaches of Yangtze River, China
Hydrologic regime plays a major role in structuring biotic diversity within river ecosystems by controlling key habitat conditions within the river channel and floodplain. Daily flow records from seven hydrological stations and the range of variability approach were utilized to investigate the variability and spatial pattern of the hydrologic alterations induced by the construction of the Three...
